Easter Time in Serbia – April 2014

This is a set departure tour starting on April 16th and lasting 9 days/8 nights. It will allow you to see the best sites of Serbia (its medieval monasteries: Studenica, Sopocani, Zica, Manasija, Ravanica, etc), its Roman heritage (Felix Romuliana and Mediana), its big towns (Belgrade-the capital, Zajecar, Nis, etc) and to celebrate with a local family one of the most important Serbian Orthodox holidays - Easter. It is a small group tour, for up to 7 people - more detailed itinerary and accurate price per person – see below

 

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1, 12 April, Saturday: Belgrade – Velika Plana.
Meet and greet in the afternoon. Pick up at your hotel or at the airport is included. Transfer to Velika Plana for overnight and traditional Serbian dinner in ethnovillage “Moravski Konaci”.

Day 2, 13 April, Sunday (Palm Sunday): Velika Plana – Koporin Monastery – Topola – Velika Plana.
Witness Serbian traditions for Palm Sunday at Koporin Monastery (resting place of great Serbian Depot Stephan Lazarevic). Then drive to Topola. Tour of Karadjordje´s Memorial Complex and St. George Church (beautifully decorated with mosaics, the church is also Karadjordjevic´s family Mausoleum). Overnight and dinner in Velika Plana, ethnovillage Moravski Konaci”.

Day 3, 14 April, Monday: Velika Plana – Manasija Monastery – Despotovac/Lisine – Resavska Cave – Monastery Ravanica – Zajecar.
Drive through Central Serbia (Sumadija region) and visit some of its best known sites, such as: Monastery Manasija (founded in early 15th century by Despot Stephan Lazarevic); Lisine - a nice waterfall on Resava river (lunch will be provided here); Resavska Cave – the first one to be open for tourist visits in Serbia; Ravanica Monastery (14th century, resting place of King Lazar). Continue to Zajecar for overnight in a local hotel.

Day 4, 15 April, Tuesday: Zajecar/Felix Romuliana – Nis/Mediana.
Morning visit to Felix Romuliana/Gamzigrad (UNESCO Heritage, ancient Roman complex of palaces built by Emperor Galerius). Continue to Nis, birth place of Roman Emperor Constantine the Great and visit Mediana – Roman archaeological site and former imperial residence. Dinner and overnight in Nis, at local hotel.

Day 5, 16 April, Wednesday: Nis – Prolom Banja (Djavolja Varos) – Studenica Monastery. Travel to Prolom Banja spa town. In its vicinity, visit the impressive natural site “Djavolja Varos” (Devils’ Town). Then continue to Studenica Monastery for dinner and overnight in the dormitory of the monastery. (Visit of the monastery may be done on this day, if time allows it).

Day 6, 17 April, Thursday: Studenica Monastery – Gradac Monastery – Novi Pazar area – Studenica Monastery.
In the morning, visit Gradac Monastery (13th century, built in the style of Raska school).Then go for a visit to the famous sites in Novi Pazar area: St Peter and Paul’s Church (9th century, considered to be the oldest church on Serbian territory), Djurdjevi Stupovi (12th century Serbian monastery, UNESCO heritage site) and also Sopocani monastery (UNESCO heritage site dating to 13th century, famous for its beautiful original fresco art). Return for dinner and overnight in the dormitory of Studenica Monastery.

Day 7, 18 April, Friday: Studenica Monastery – Zica Monastery - Gornji Milanovac.
Start the day with a visit to Studenica Monastery – UNESCO heritage site dating back to the 12th century, burial place of its founder Stephan Nemanja and part of his family (first king of Serbia’s most significant medieval royal dynasty). Visit also Zica Monastery - originally dating back to the 13th century and the first seat of the Serbian Archbishopric in the times of St Sava. In the second half of the day, arrive in Gornji Milanovac area and accommodate with local family. Participate with your host family in Easter tradition of egg painting. Dinner and overnight in private home in Gornji Milanovac area.

Day 8, 19 April, Saturday: Gornji Milanovac - Ovcar Kablar Gorge and monasteries – Gornji Milanovac.
Take an excursion to enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Ovcar- Kablar Gorge and also visit to Serbian medieval monasteries of St Nicholas and St John. In the evening, participate in the Resurrection Mass in Vracevsnica Women’s Monastery from the 15th century. Dinner and overnight in private home in Gornji Milanovac area.

Day 9, 20 April, Sunday (Easter Day): Gornji Milanovac – Belgrade.
Late wake up. Traditional Easter lunch with your host family. Transfer to Belgrade in the afternoon – panoramic city tour upon arrival, including views of all best known sites of the Serbian capital: St Sava church, the Serbian Parliament, Knez Milos boulevard, Tito’s Mausoleum and of course, Kalemegdan Fortress. Drop off at your hotel in Belgrade or direct transfer to the airport (if your flight is in late afternoon or in the evening) is included in the price. End of services.

Note:
Additional days can be added at the end of this tour. Our suggestions: either a full day tour to the Iron Gates area (Smederevo and Golubac fortresses, Viminacijum Museum, Djerdap Natural Park all the way to the Iron Gates Dam and Locks) or a full day tour to Vojvodina region (Novi Sad, Sremski Karlovci and Krusedol Monastery on Fruska Gora).
